Note(s):
  • Today I taught Global Perspectives in all grade 6 classes in which students should debate whether or not social media will lead communication in the future. As in any other normal debating, I put each class into two big groups. The first group became the positive/affirmative team and the second one became the negative team. I let them choose the three speakers. After getting three each, I gave them around 15-25 minutes to find the reasons that are logic to support their arguments. The positive team of course should agree with the statement that "Social Media Will Lead Communication in the Future", while the negative one should disagree with it. As debating is not easy, I let them to speak in both Bahasa Indonesia and English. The debate went well in 6 Umar, the first class I taught as shown by how most of the students helped each other in the discussion and how the speakers stated their arguments. Some students event asked for another debating activity in class. However, in 6 Ali, it went a little less attractive as some students did not seem to be involved in the activity. What happened in both classes was that it finished later than it was supposed to be. However, What I like about these students is that they can already support an argument with making-sense reasons, though it did not "hit" the main point. But it was good already. They have learned how to support their arguments with logical reasons.
Reflection(s):
  • I need to manage my teaching time better. Think about the time alloted for each step of activity.
  • I need to make sure that everyone is involved in the lesson. Maybe, finding a sort of ice-breaking game would work.
