Today I attended English Matriculation meeting with parents. Here Ms. Iyut explained all the backgrounds why we need to do this to parents. The flow of information she wrote and explained in the PPT is very well-structured, therefore hopefully would be quite easy for them to understand.
Alhamdulillah a lot of parents who were invited showed up. Some of them even asked questions. Quite surprisingly, a parent of a grade 2 student, was asking us to use translation in the program. Of course, basically, it violates the very basic principle of English as a second language learning. And Ms. Iyut's response to this question seemed to be quite convincing, since that parent did not ask for more explanation. The other questions were quite normative, something like scheduling and the materials covered.
The Q & A session got even hotter when a parent questioned why her elder daughter is on the list while she thinks that it is supposed to be her second daughter who really needs such a program. All teachers actually questioned that as well, because we believe that the student in question is clever, despite her silent nature in class. It is her homeroom teacher from last year who recommended her to put in the list. And after a short debate and consideration, the Principal deccided to cross out that student off the list and wojld directly ca her to announce the change in the decision via persinal WhatsApp call on Monday morning.
Another pair of parents expressed their agreement to this program to help her daughter perform better. Though they tended to be little showing off with the girl's achievement in her old school, they fully support the program.
Overall, the meeting went well. Hopefully, it helped shape their understanding better on our endeavors to support students to be able to get into the class so as to catch up with their high-achieving classmates. In turns, I believe that it will help maintain our English atmosphere at school. That's one of our school's main aims as a bilingual/national institution.
